Since 2006, author and speaker Mary Wegzyn has been helping student-athletes through her seminars, books, and 1-on-1 coaching. Her successful coaching has helped athletes in a wide range of sports and at a wide range of levels earn scholarships and become college athletes! In 2014, Mary partnered with her son, Matt, and his college football teammate from the University of Tennessee, Derrick Furlow, to spread the message and system! Now it’s your turn! The dynamic team at “Be A College Athlete” is locked and loaded with the latest information and education to maximize your efforts!

Meet The Team

MARY WEGZYN

Mary, a native of Metro Detroit, Michigan, is a nationally acclaimed speaker on the subject of college athletics recruiting. Mary earned her bachelor’s degree in Comprehensive Communication and Theatre Arts from Eastern Michigan University. Her books and presentations receive rave reviews from student-athletes, parents, coaches, high school counselors, administrators and athletic directors. Mary understands the recruiting process, the terms, the misconceptions and gives her readers invaluable insight into the world of college recruiting. This book gives student-athletes and parents a proven method to use to jump start the recruiting process. Mary’s two oldest sons are among the numerous student-athletes to successfully use these methods to get recruited and play at the next level (Matt, University of Tennessee – Football; Mike, University of Massachusetts and University of Tennessee – Football).

MIKE WEGZYN

Mike Wegzyn, a former high school All-American, Division 1-A starting QB, Division 1-A strength and conditioning coach of 17+ teams, and professional QB brings years of extensive knowledge to the table. After studying alongside some of the top quarterback minds in the world, Mike took his talent to Massachusetts and received a degree in Kinesiology in only 3 years. After starting two seasons for UMass and earning his degree early, he transferred to the University of Tennessee to finish his collegiate playing career while studying Exercise Physiology in graduate school. Upon finishing school, Mike then went on to aquire his CSCS certification (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) from the NSCA, one of the top-tier fitness credentials in the industry. Mike’s passion for the helping athletes unlock their true potential led him to seek a partnership with Be A College Athlete to guide athletes through the intricacies of the recruiting process by giving them the insider information needed to be successful!

DERRICK FURLOW

Derrick, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, is the perfect example of what a student-athlete should be! Derrick played Safety for the University of Tennessee’s football team and was a part of top 25 ranked teams as well as participated in multiple bowl games. Derrick was coached by and able to experience the inner working of two coaching staffs, one Hall of Fame head coach (Phillip Fulmer) and one staff that is widely considered the greatest recruiting staff of all time (Lane Kiffin’s staff including Ed Orgeron). Derrick graduated from UT with a bachelor’s in Legal Studies and a masters in Sports Psychology. After college, Derrick has been highly successful in the fields of athletics, scouting, coaching, sales, marketing, corporate training, and motivation speaking! His skill set combined with personal experience makes him uniquely qualified to educate and mentor high school student-athletes, parents, coaches, and administrators.

MATT WEGZYN

Matt, a native of Metro Detroit, Michigan, is the classic underdog story! Matt played Tight End for the University of Tennessee’s football team and was a part of top 25 ranked teams as well as participated in multiple bowl games. Matt was coached by and able to experience the inner working of three coaching staffs, including one Hall of Fame head coach (Phillip Fulmer) and one staff that is widely considered the greatest recruiting staff of all time (Lane Kiffin’s staff including Ed Orgeron). Matt received his bachelors in Journalism/Electronic Media with a specification in Sports Broadcasting. After football, Matt has been highly successful entrepreneur in the fields of broadcasting and journalism (including credits on ESPN), music industry, health and wellness, marketing, sales, coaching, scouting, corporate training and motivational speaking! Matt’s experiences and refined skills are the perfect combination to be an educator and motivator for high school student-athletes, parents, coaches, and administrators.
